Alessandro Mendini, architetto, è nato a
Milano nel 1931. Ha diretto le riviste
“Casabella”, “Modo” e “Domus”. Sul suo lavoro
e su quello compiuto con l’Atelier Alchimia
sono uscite monografie in varie lingue.
Realizza oggetti, mobili, ambienti, pitture,
installazioni, architetture. Collabora con compagnie
internazionali come Alessi, Philips,
Swarovski, Swatch, ed è consulente di varie
industrie, anche nell’Estremo Oriente, per
l’impostazione dei loro problemi di immagine
e di design.
E’ membro onorario della Bezalel Academy of
Arts and Design di Gerusalemme. Nel 1979 e
nel 1981 gli è stato attribuito il Compasso
d’Oro per il design, è “Chevalier des Arts et
des Lettres” in Francia e ha ricevuto l’onorificenza
dell’Architectural League di New York.
E’ stato professore di design alla Hochschule
für Andgewandte Kunst a Vienna.
Suoi lavori si trovano in vari musei e collezioni
private.
Nel 1989 ha aperto con il fratello Francesco
l’atelier Mendini a Milano, progettando la casa
Alessi a Omegna, il teatrino della Bicchieraia
ad Arezzo, le Fabbriche Alessi e il Forum-
Museum di Omegna, il rinnovo di una parte
storica della Stazione Termini a Roma in Italia;
una torre ad Hiroshima in Giappone, il Museo
di Groningen in Olanda, il Casino Arosa ad
Arosa e un quartiere a Lugano in Svizzera,
due stazioni di metropolitana e il restauro
della Villa Comunale a Napoli ed altri edifici in
Europa. | Alessandro Mendini, architect, was born in Milan in 1931. He directed the magazines "Casabella", "Modo" and "Domus". About his work and the work accomplished with the Atelier Alchimia, monographs were distributed in several languages.
He creates objects, furniture, environments, paintings, installations, architectures. He collaborates with international companies like Alessi, Philips, Swarovski, Swatch and is a consultant for several industries, also in the Far East, for the setting of their image and design problems.
He is honorary member of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design of Jerusalem. In 1979 and 1981 he received the Golden Compass Award for design, he is "Chevalier Des Arts Et Des Lettres" in France and he received the honour of the Architectural League of New York. He was design professor at the Hochschule für Andgewandte Kunst in Vienna. His works are found in various museums and private collections.
In 1989 he opened the Mendini ateljier in Milan together with his brother Francesco, planning the Alessi house in Omegna, the theatre of Bicchieraia in Arezzo, the Alessi Factories and the Forum-Museum of Omegna, and the renewal of a historical part of Termini Station in Rome in Italy; a tower in Hiroshima in Japan, the Groningen Museum in Holland, the Arosa Casino in Arosa and a suburb in Lugano in Switzerland, two subway stations and the restoration of the Villa communale in Naples and other buildings in Europe. |
